Our university organized an important training seminar to inform undergraduate students about micro-competency programs. The seminar attracted significant interest from university students, and the role and importance of micro-competencies in today's business world were emphasized during the event.

Why Are Micro-Competencies Important?

In the seminar given by Rector Advisor Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Alparslan, it was conveyed to the students why the concept of micro-competencies is of great importance in terms of professional success. Prof. Dr. Alparslan stated the following in his speech:

“Is our diploma sufficient for our profession when we graduate, or not? We need to know the answer to this question clearly. This is not just a situation specific to our university; it applies to all students graduating from higher education institutions. To gain a competitive advantage in future professions, merely having a diploma may not be enough. Individuals need to acquire additional skills and continuously improve themselves to succeed in the business world.”

Prof. Dr. Alparslan noted that micro-competencies are becoming increasingly important, referencing the latest report from the World Economic Forum. According to the report, the skills gap in the global workforce is at 70%, and this gap is seen as a significant problem by employers. It was stated that employers organize internal and external training programs to equip their employees with new skills, with 85% of these programs being offered to managers. Additionally, it was emphasized that candidates with new skills are preferred in recruitment processes in the human resources sector at a rate of 70%.

Micro-Competencies and Preparation for the Future

Prof. Dr. Alparslan pointed out that in today's business world, in addition to macro competencies (university diplomas and main academic programs), micro skills are also of great importance. Citing LinkedIn data, Alparslan reported that the hiring rates based on micro-competencies have increased by 63%, indicating that the need for new skills in today's business world has grown. Alparslan also emphasized that the most significant success of individuals in their university life is related to what they gain outside the current curricula.

Stating that education needs to keep pace with the constantly changing world conditions, Alparslan said:

“The world of education is struggling to keep up with the speed of change in technology and business life. A skills program that is valid today may lose its validity within a few years. Therefore, individuals need to possess three essential characteristics: to be adaptive, to show flexibility, and to prioritize continuous learning. Nowadays, it is not enough to rely solely on university education. We must continuously improve ourselves, acquire new skills, and adapt to changing conditions. Otherwise, just like being on a fast-moving bicycle, we will fall behind the moment we stop.”

At the end of the seminar, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Gürsoy, Rector Advisor Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Alparslan, and Education Development Coordinator and Director of the Institute of Educational Sciences Prof. Dr. Perihan Ünüvar answered questions from students.
